  • If furniture is going to be stored, make sure the insurance will cover the entire contents.

  • Start a moving expenses book. Some of your expenses may be tax deductible, so be sure to save the receipts.

  • If you're moving to another province, contact the provincial health insurance departments of both the province you're moving to and the one you're leaving. If you're staying in the same province, make sure the department has your new address.

  • Gather together all important documents for every member of the family. Don't forget your pet's documents.

  • Register your change of address with the post office.

  • Begin mailing change of address cards and keep a record of cards sent. Don't forget to notify all credit card companies and other creditors. such as insurance companies and financial institutions.

  • Contact your bank. Arrange for the transfer of all accounts and personal loans. Remember to order checks with your new address.

  • Provide clear instructions on everything that must be moved. Don't include jewelry or other small valuables that could be easily lost or damaged.

  • Cancel newspaper subscriptions or change delivery address.

2 weeks prior to moving

  • Have a garage sale. It's a fun and profitable way to get rid of items you no longer need.

  • If you are doing your own packing, begin packing for your residential move.

  • Number all boxes and keep an inventory. Label all boxes as to content.

  • Return all borrowed items, and retrieve items you have loaned to others.

  • Lead packers around the house and make sure they understand all your instructions.

  • Make sure you have all keys for the house for the new owners. (Don't forget garage and shed keys!)

Moving Out

  • Lay down heavy plastic or old runners to minimize dirt in the house. Do not use them on stairways - they're dangerous.

  • Lead the movers around the house again and make sure they understand all your instructions.

  • Check the movers' inventory against your inventory. Count the number of boxes.

  • Clearly label and leave all spare keys, and the code for the security system if you have one, inside the house unless otherwise arranged.

  • First priorities will be the children's rooms, TV or radio, and a basic kitchen.

  • Since you have not yet unpacked, go out and have a nice dinner. You deserve it!

1 day after the move

  • Have movers unpack if they packed.

Sureway Relocation Nationwide Commercial Relocations

Rates for Commercial Relocation:

For local moves we charge by the hour. The rate is determined by the number of men and trucks used based on the circumstances of the move. This can be determined by receiving an estimate of cost from your SUREWAY  representative.

Commercial Moves Travel Time:

The travel time of a move is comprised of two components. The first being the time it takes to get from our office to the location of the pick up and the second being the time from the delivery address back to the office. These two components make up the total travel time.

Minimum Hours for Commercial Moves:

For all local moves SUREWAY has a four hour minimum. This means if a move takes less than four hours, including travel time, the total charges would be for a minimum of four hours.

Extra Charges:

At SUREWAY our only charges in addition to the hourly rate would be for boxes, packing supplies, and replacement value insurance.

Tips for Having a Successful Commercial Move In-Town or Nationwide

Implementing A system for tagging & Marking

Office Moving Guide

The process of coding floor plans is the first step in developing a logical move plan. The strategy is to prepare the move to flow in a logical and fluid manner. Every item to be moved must be identified and labeled so that it may be placed by the mover in its exact destination. Location. A tag also instructs a mover how to handle that item.

Example:

  • Location (where the item is going)

  • Sequence (one color may proceed another)

  • Liquidation (directive to the mover)

  • Do not move (directive to the mover)

  • Storage (directive to the mover)

  • Contents (directive to the unpacker)

Placement of furniture and equipment at your new facility will be identified by number, not by name. When coding the floor plan each area being moved must be identified with a single room or area number. To identify placement location, placards with the proper room numbers must be affixed to the entrance of each individual area and/or room at your new facility.

Everything must be tagged for your commercial move!

For example, when a desk has a removable return, both pieces are tagged. Each piece of computer equipment is tagged.

Example:

  • monitor

  • CPU

  • keyboard

  • cable

Everything must be tagged no matter how seemingly inconsequential

Example:

  • floor mats

  • white boards

  • trash cans, etc…

items without a tag will not be moved. This great level of detail means less supervision will be required at your new facility (remember, the mover’s time is your money).

Computer Equipment and Desk Top Machinery

An example of our method for indicating placements at destination is shown below. Each individual item is assigned a number which corresponds to its place on the floor plan. In this example the employee’s room/area number is 15. A dash (“-“) is placed after the number and each individual piece of furniture is assigned a numbered location which corresponds to the number shown on your floor plan. Proper tagging and placarding will be a key in achieving an organized and smooth flowing move. It will save your company time and money.

Packing & Marking Containers, Boxes & Cartons

The movers will supply “tote” cartons which are uniform in size (making them easier to handle, thus speeding the move and saving money). Tote cartons fold together and do not require tape for assembly or sealing. They are extremely strong. If you decide to utilize other cartons, make sure they are thoroughly taped closed. Cartons are stacked when moved; therefore, please don’t over pack them. Flat tops on cartons will speed the move. Tag boxes on both ends so the movers don’t have to spend time turning the boxes on the dollies to find out where they go. Do not tag cartons on top!

Desks & Credenzas

Desks, credenzas and storage cabinets are moved on end. Unless the contents of these items are completely emptied and packed into cartons the contents will fall out and be lost. Desks and credenzas are tagged on the top surface. Chairs are tagged on the back rest.

Photocopy Machines

Photocopy machines need to be serviced by the manufacturer or service contract agent before being moved. Failure to do so may void your machine’s service contract or warranty.

Bookcases & Storage Cabinets

Empty completely and pack the contents into tote cartons, Bookcase shelf  pegs should be removed and packed away for safe keeping. Loose bookcase shelves should be tagged separately and laid down in the bottom of the bookcase. Bookcases are tagged on either side or on top. Storage cabinets are tagged on the upper right hand corner.

Steel Shelving

Assembled units must be cleared of all supplies and stock before they can be moved. See your money for recommendations on tagging steel shelves holding stock, Forget about moving steel shelving with product on them. Sounds great, but doesn’t work.
